Sporadic entries over a ten-year period consist of extracts from literature, a series of translations from French into English, and a journal kept as a resident of New York, 1836 June-1837 March. Evidently having moved to N.Y.C. from Cincinnati in order to find work as an actor, Holmes describes the unscrupulous theater owners and producers that he encountered. Holmes describes the dress and deportment of the audience at the Park Theatre and characterizes Ellen Tree's (Ellen Kean's) acting. As a young man of about twenty years old, and alone, Holmes frequently met streetwalkers and records in detail his visit to a brothel. He also records his affair with a married woman who lived opposite his boarding house.
